With the useful life of the city landfill meeting its end, the Municipality of Extrema was undergoing technical studies to change to a better solution for the disposal of municipal solid waste. This studies leads to the energy recovery from waste, through a thermochemical power generation plant, to be installed next to the municipal landfill area. This plant will allow the gasification of waste and conversion into electric power.
The main advantages of this plant are the reduction of the area needed for waste disposal, the elimination of environmental contamination of soil, grounwater and air, the production of an economic asset (electricity), in addition to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to the Municipal Policy to Combat Climate Change.
Between September and November, works were carried out to do the topography and planialtimetric surveys of the area, waste crushing tests for laboratory analysis and also gasification tests.
The construction of the plant, which will be the second to use this technology in the State of Minas Gerais, will guarantee not only the environmentally correct disposal of solid waste from Extrema city, but also the generation of a revenue. There will be an economic gain from the sale of the produced electric energy, added to the cost avoided for the final disposal of solid waste, which will be reverted in public actions to improve the population quality of life.
